Love it, loathe it or are entirely indifferent about the whole thing, Valentine’s Day is coming up fast. So, if you’re looking for a place to spend 14 February, why not head over to Lakeside Kitchen & Bar? Our amazing venue in the heart of Ferry Meadows provides panoramic views of peaceful Gunwade Lake and the picture-perfect landscape beyond. If the sun is shining, enjoy a drink and nibbles from our beautiful balcony; or, if the weather’s not playing ball, sit by our cosy log burner.

We’ve got a fully licenced bar that serves a range of great drinks, including Prosecco and red wine. We also have teas, hot chocolate and plenty of soft drinks – as we mention in this recent post. Ferry Meadows, meanwhile, is home to an abundance of quiet walking routes if you fancy a Valentine’s Day stroll, including the new Bluebell Woods boardwalk route. And if you really want to push the boat out, you could even have a go on one of pedalos next door at Nene Outdoors.

The Tradition of Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day has been about for nearly two millennia. The celebration takes its name from Saint Valentine, a Roman priest from the third century AD. Valentine had a habit of helping young men get married, a practice that defied the wishes of Claudius II. The emperor had banned marriage because he thought unmarried men made better soldiers.

When Valentine’s romantic racket was rumbled, the unfortunate priest was imprisoned and sentenced to death. While incarcerated, Valentine fell in love with the jailer’s daughter and wrote her a letter, signed “from your Valentine”.

While Saint Valentine may be long gone, the sending of love letters to convey your affection for a special somebody lives on to this day. Other modern Valentine’s traditions include exchanging gifts, going out for dinner and, of course, proposing – which brings us neatly on to our exciting new service: weddings at Lakeside

Because now, in addition to wedding receptions, we’re also available for wedding ceremonies throughout the year. Ably assisted by our resident celebrant Sid Bridges of Prodigal Ceremonies, we’ll help you to create a wonderful wedding that truly reflects the ideals, values and beliefs of you and your partner.
