Autumn brings falling leaves and bright colours – winter brings dark nights and falling temperatures. Short of a national revolt against Day Light Saving, there’s not too much that we can do to combat the long nights, however, there is plenty that can be done to keep warm – like making sure you get enough of these delicious foods.

Porridge

Starting your day with a warm meal can help to increase your body temperature. Moreover porridge contains lots of carbohydrates allowing you to recuperate the energy you lose through trying to keep warm. In addition to this, porridge grains contain a starch called beta-glucan – just 3 grams of this a day can help to reduce cholesterol by as much as 10%. All in all, porridge is a great oat-ernative to cereal in winter.

Bananas

A banana can resemble a friendly, yellow smile if looked it from the right angle – but it’s not just this heart-warming fact that makes it such an a-peel-ing winter food. The brightly hued fruit is very high in magnesium as well as vitamin B. These two nutritious elements are vital in the correct functioning of the thyroid and adrenal glands to function at an optimal level – which can help your body to regulate its temperature during the cold weather.

Spices (but avoid spicy food)

Although spicy food, like chilies and black pepper, warm you up, they are not the ideal thing to eat when the weather takes a turn for the worst. This is because when you eat very spicy food you can start to sweat, which has the effect of actually cooling you down. Instead, when winter sets in, try to consume plenty of mild spices, like cinnamon, cumin and nutmeg. These foods can help to warm you up by increasing your metabolism and creating energy.

Hot Chocolate

Not all food that warm you up has to be healthy. In fact, and we may be biased on this, but we recommend a Lakeside hot chocolate when the temperature drops! We serve our hot chocolates with marshmallows and cream. If you do want to make your tasty drink even more delicious why not combine it with a wintry walk around the Ferry Meadows grounds beforehand?

As well as great hot chocolate to keep you warm, we also have a newly installed log burner at Lakeside – so come and join us! Click on the following link to see the full Lakeside menu.
